Overwatch’s Uprising event is Blizzard’s newest arcade mode for the spectacular team based shooter of the same name. As a long time Overwatch player, I’ve often contemplated what it would be like to play with the characters we all know and love in a beat-em-up style scenario. Here are my thoughts so far.
This new arcade mode has a few variations with one letting you play through the classic story by picking from four hero choices: Reinhardt, Mercy, Tracer, or Torbjorn. The limitation to these choices forces players to really stick to their roles of healer, tank, or DPS. There is little room for any fancy John Rambo stuff here.
Being the incredibly brave hero type that I am, I jumped into Legendary mode on my first outing. The hardest part about it was the fact that these bots are very accurate, very aggressive, and do massive damage. The bots have the same weakness as characters do in the game, meaning headshots deal more damage and they can still be pushed, frozen, or debuffed. Of course, from what I’ve seen the bots come in a wide variety of models and having made it to less than half of the game in legendary, I do not know what other surprises are in store after hitting the payload objective. Revives are unlimited, but the catch is that a teammate has to stand over your corpses for a bit to revive you if you get killed by the null sector bots.
The other mode in Overwatch’s Uprising Event is an All Heroes mode. Players are able to play with their favorite heroes in All heroes mode. While it is great to have more than the classic 4 options in regular Uprising, the problem I encounter here is that few players ever want to play as the healer. Of course, this is an easy fix if you have three other friends that will help you clear the game.
Story-wise, Uprising delves further into the Overwatch universe to a time before the Overwatch team disbanded. The Null Sector, an Omnix extremist group seeking to exterminate humans and human sympathizers alike, have invaded and occupied King’s Row. The mission as the strike team is to weaken the Null Sector’s defenses from within for a counter attack to liberate the city . . . This is Tracer’s first mission.
Nonetheless, the game type is so much fun. I expect more game types like this that not only provide a great challenge but also give more history about the Overwatch universe. Overwatch’s Uprising event is available for play from April 11th-May 2nd.
