Yesterday, Tequila Works finally confirmed the launch date for Rime to be May 26th, 2017. The game has been in the works for a long time, so it’s safe to say we’re pretty excited.
In Rime, you play as a young boy who washes up on a mysterious island after a rainstorm. You don’t know what’s going on – all you know is that you see wild animals, long-forgotten ruins and a massive tower that beckons you to come closer. Armed with your wits and a strong curiosity (as well as the guidance of a helpful fox) you must explore the island, reach the tower’s peak, and unlock its closely guarded secrets.
Rime’s first reveal was through a gameplay trailer at Gamescom 2013. With third-person single player gameplay, cel-shaded art, and set firmly in the adventure genre, comparisons to games like The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker and Journey were drawn almost immediately. Not much more was heard in regards to the game until early 2016, when Tequila Works announced via Twitter that it had acquired the rights to the game from Sony. Originally a PlayStation exclusive, the game was now slotted for not only the PlayStation 4 but the Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC as well.
What I’m most excited to see from Rime is the exploration aspect. Tequila Works has hinted at there being hidden items to find, and as a big fan of scavenger hunts, looking for rare items in such a gorgeous world as Rime’s promises to be a great way to spend my time. The puzzle aspect also looks pretty intriguing, as it has been stated to include “light and shadow projection, perspective, platforming, and even time manipulation”, according to Rime’s official website. However the puzzles may manifest, it’s safe to say I’ll be grabbing a copy as soon as it releases this May!
