Atlus and Shin Megami Tensei are almost synonymous when it comes to JRPGs as it seems like they don’t delve into many properties outside of this series. According to an article on Famitsu and later translated by the Playstation focused DualSHOCKERS, Atlus is stepping away from their usual MO to create an all new experience for their faithful. The currently untitled RPG is being headed by Persona Director Katsura Hashino and is slated to not only be an extension to the persona series, but to also have nothing to do with Atlus’ infamous Shin Megami Tensei line of products. To further this, the company has created an internal team named “Studio Zero” and codenamed the project: Project ReFANTASY.
The original translated text from Famitsu reads:
“It’s Neither “Persona” nor “Shin Megami Tensei.” A New Challenge.
Starting from Zero.
The Atlus RPG was born 25 years ago. At the time, stories in the so-called “fantasy” worlds were mainstream. The “Persona” series released as a spinoff of “Shin Megami Tensei” was launched as a “counter” to such a natural world view.
Both series have been developed with concepts that have always been in opposition to their times until now, including the latest games. So what could be the image of a new RPG tackled by ATLUS now in addition to continuing those series?
I think that it is to challenge the “normality” of the genre which has been consumed for decades. That challenge is about to begin right now. The moment of birth from zero. We would be pleased if you could stand-by us at the moment we launch our challenge from zero.”
Surprisingly, Atlus also released a few images of a fair maiden clad in armor bearing elven ears and red hair. While Atlus does not move nearly as many products as Square Enix, their RPGs have always been made to perfection as they don’t have the extra pressure to release on time that most companies do. Sure, there have been a couple of missteps but this brand new RPG from them will definitely add a brand new way to play that may shed its “school boy romance simulator” style and give them freedom to express even more themes and ideals. Further details on this Fantasy JRPG will be revealed on Nico Nico December 23rd. Be sure to check back then for more details on what will no doubt be yet another awesome RPG.
