According to Overwatch’s principal designer, Geoff Goodman, there will be some changes coming to Roadhog’s hook ability, and I for one am not at all surprised. Mr. Goodman posted thoughts on the proposed nerfs in battle.net forums (https://us.battle.net/forums/en/overwatch/topic/20752659040?page=3#post-58).
Hook hackers beware as the days of the miracle hooks will soon be gone. As stated in the forums, players will not be able to “hook someone, spin 180, and dump someone off a cliff.” The hook will be changed to drag an opponent to a position where they and Roadhog are face to face when hooked. Also new “persistent line-of-sight checks” will be added to prevent opponents from being hooked around walls. Instead if a hook is thrown and an opponent moves out of sight, the hook will break.
The biggest thing I’m happy to see the developers noticing is Roadhog’s ability to throw magic hooks that can phase through walls. Nothing was more annoying than being engaged in a fire fight packed full of players throwing a volley of bullets at each other, only to notice Roadhog waddle into sight with his arm reaching for the hook on you. You dodge successfully, only to see the curved hook phase through the columns of the temple of Anubis grab you and lead you right into the enemy swarm. Moments later, the last point is taken because while you were dead, the enemy does a blitzkrieg into the point and (surprise, surprise) you were playing the only healer on the team. Now, many things are wrong with a scenario like that, but what I’m getting at is that physics shouldn’t change just because a character get a lock on you. Once again, I’m very glad to see these changes on Roadhog and expect they will introduce a bit more balance into the game.
Among these changes, Goodman also hinted that a buff may be in store for Sombra. He considered her too weak in her current state, so I’m curious to see what is in store for her: perhaps a second MSG, a larger clip, an ultimate that disables and does damage. We’ll have to wait and see.
These proposed changes are amidst the newly introduced Oasis stage, which came out a few days ago. I will do a more in depth review of the stage in a future article.
In the mean time, let me know what you guys think of the upcoming changes. Till then good luck, have fun.
