Nintendo’s poster boy for the last three decades has touched the lives of many people. In fact, most modern AAA and indie game developers grew up playing titles starring Mario and Luigi. Every March 10th, however, Nintendo has gotten into the tradition of celebrating Mario and Mario Day 2017 is no different. The reason behind choosing March 10th as the day to celebrate this cultural icon is actually simpler than it may seem. Even Nintendo likes to playfully point out how they came to this decision: “March 10, Mar.10, MAR10… Get it?” But the core idea behind this day is for the video game conglomerate to do what it does best, bring smiles to people the only way they know how.
With that in mind, this year Nintendo will be working with the non-profit Starlight Children’s Foundation whose mission is to bring joy into the lives of terminally ill children. Their mission statement is similar to Nintendo’s as they aim to achieve this with entertainment, education, and innovative technology. For this charity, Nintendo has designed six gorgeous “Starlight Brave Gowns” that feature Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Donkey Kong, Yoshi, and one that features the whole crew. Not to be just those guys that designed it, however, they are also giving a sizable donation to ensure the program can make at least 2,000 gowns which should make a lot of children and their loved ones happy.
“Mario puts a smile on everyone’s face, and we wanted our activities on MAR10 Day to reflect that,” said Don James, Nintendo of America’s Executive Vice President of Operations. “Whether a longtime fan or someone new to the world of Nintendo, Mario can power up anyone’s day.”
Naturally, Nintendo is also doing plenty of advertising and goofy things this Mario Day 2017. That will have to be a subject for another article as I would prefer not to undermine the impact that their work with this charity has.
