NieR: Automata is inching closer and closer to release with just three days until the PS4 launch and Square has finally announced the previously unknown Steam release date. Although they initially just said “later this year”, they have since released a statement issuing a March 17th launch date for PC.
This is great news for anyone looking to get a higher resolution version of the bullet hell ballet (seriously, the PS4 demo proved this) but there are also a few other details that were revealed. The day one Steam edition includes a “Valve Character Accessory” as well as the other day one content that was previously announced. This exclusive Valve accessory is literally what it sounds like and places a red metal valve over the lead character Android 2B’s right eye like a steampunk monocle. While this is not the most flattering of accessories for the well-dressed robot, it is a nod to Valve for releasing the game on their platform.
There’s a lot of hope riding on NieR: Automata that’s not even related to the series itself but rather the developer Platinum Games who have seen a few setbacks recently including the cancellation of the much sought after Scalebound and a few licensed games that underdelivered. Just going by the demo, the studio is definitely back in full form as each encounter is intriguing and the switch between over the head, side scrolling, and behind the back perspectives is seamless.
NieR: Automata is slated to release this Tuesday, March 7th for the PlayStation 4 and later on March 17th for the PC.
