If you haven’t picked up on it just yet, I’m a huge JRPG player. From the first taste of Final Fantasy VI to the latest title I’m playing through, Tales of Zestiria, I love everything about the genre. I fell in love with a few titular series early on (Tales Of & Grandia) however recently I can say that the Shin Megami Tensei: Persona series has stolen my heart.
Ever since my first encounter with Persona 3 while working at Gamestop, I was smitten by the series’ ambiance and gameplay. Persona combines the best parts of Pokemon, the turn based strategy of classic RPGs, and a difficulty beyond anything else in the genre culminating in an experience unlike any other. What truly sets it apart however is the ability to draw you into its world and make you care deeply about the carefully crafted cast of characters. Everyone who has played a Persona game can name their favorite characters with relative ease (mine are Junpei from P3 and Dojima-san from P4) as well as tell you a time the games haven broken their hearts.
So naturally, a new Persona 5 trailer even if in Japanese, is absolute bliss for just about any fan around the world.
From what the trailer shows, Persona 5 is very focused on its “phantom thief” theme and has a bit more actiony segments mixed in. The way the characters move and engage in combat is very telling of their personalities and the platforming is dizzying but exciting! The dungeon design in the previous entries has been kind of grid based and boxy (although constantly changing) so it’s nice to see these sprawling vertical dungeons shown off.
The combat also looks amazing with new touches like Baton Pass which is probably similar to a mechanic in Final Fantasy X to swap characters in the midst of battle. This is just one of many new tweaks which hasn’t been done yet in the series. Also, the battle results screen looks so freaking cool as your protagonist runs off…. dang. Enough gushing though, the amount of work the staff put in should be more than enough to increase the ranks of the Atlus Faithful.
Persona 5 will release on the Playstation 3 & 4 September 15th 2016 in Japan with no western release date as of yet. Oh, wondering where I got that date from? There did happen to be one more awesome video released today. Enjoy!
