“Remember your first Goomba stomp?” Nintendo remembers. Mini NES style.
It seems with the Nintendo Switch unveiling, we are looking towards the future hungry as ever for what’s new and coming for our gaming pleasure. Along with that, Nintendo likes to remind us of how timeless they truly are. The NES Classic Edition, or “Mini NES Classic” isn’t new technology nor are there any new titles to play on it. It simply brings us back to where it all began, the system that myself and many others started on and is one of the most significant pieces in gaming history. The NES has never lost popularity, but many have lost its hardware over the years. If you’re one of those individuals, or if you’re just too young to have played in the NES era, here is your chance.
Priced at $59.99, the power of the NES is back in your hands. Here’s the run-down of all they’re featuring in the box.
The Mini NES celebrates 30 of its classic titles pre-installed including Super Mario Bros., Metroid, Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, The Legend of Zelda, and Kirby’s Adventures. It comes with a classic grey controller. You can buy another for 2-player for $10 or if you have a classic controller for your Wii, that works as well. There’s an HDMI cable so the Mini NES plugs right into your TV. Even better, YOU CAN SAVE YOUR GAMES. They have “suspend points” which is awesome if you’re like me and not one of those badass gamers that run through every game ever made. I prefer to take my time, when I have time. Finally, there are some display mode options to give you that feel like you’re back in 1985, or a cleaner design that doesn’t make you squint so much.
The only downfall is that there is no actual physical media option so if you’re still hanging on to your now 30 year old cartridges and controllers; they are useless on the Mini NES. Still, for $60 Nintendo is offering a generous amount of classic game play without all the hassle. It’s available November 11 and will be sold by Amazon, Best Buy, and Target. More retailers will be revealed soon, probably just before release. Doesn’t look like pre-orders are possible so everyone will just have to play fair-no cheats!
NopeTad is a curious entity. Its purpose here is to spread the love of gaming. It spends its days wishing it was night and its nights frolicking and eating souls. Not much else is known of this creature. It likes cooking.
