According to Capcom, Mega Man 1 through 6 will be released for iOS and Android January 2017 in the form of Mega Man Mobile. This announcement comes via a twitter post by Capcom yesterday and later backed by a press release from the company. Capcom went on to say:
“This is the first time all six of the original 8-bit Mega Man games have been made available on smart devices, 29 years since Mega Man first exploded onto the console scene. These lovingly-crafted adaptations will remind long-time fans and introduce newcomers to what made the Blue Bomber such a popular and iconic character. Each game has been optimized for mobile devices with adjustments to game speed. Each game will be available separately for $1.99.”
It’s been a long while since I last played a Mega Man game, and in fact the last game I played with Mega Man in it was Marvel vs Capcom 3, which (if you didn’t already know) is a great game and y’all should check it out. That being said I’m excited for this sudden escalation to bring greater exposure to Mega Man through the mobile space. Mega Man Mobile introduces a great opportunity for Capcom, who has been waning on its enthusiasm to the Mega Man franchise.
This all goes to support the argument that I have been continuously making over the past year: mobile games are the future of gaming. I expect we will soon see Simon Belmont, Donkey Kong, and many others join the parade that Super Mario Run and Pokemon Go have started. Considering that Nintendo has also announced the 2017 release of a mobile Fire Emblem game, I would not be surprised to see any or all of these coming very soon.
