Marvel Vs Capcom 4 had become a pipe dream as Capcom seemed to have to explain time and time again that their licensing agreement with Marvel had passed and there was no certainty of a new crossover game ever happening again. All that changed a few months back however when leaks started pouring out and rumors began to fly of a brand new title in the series would be unveiled. That sequel is Marvel Vs Capcom Infinite.
Marvel Vs Capcom Infinite blew onto the scene with a trailer that showcased how unique its new look was as well as some minor information on what characters would be included. The graphics were certainly sharp but the actual amount of details we were given were scarce, to say the least. Today, Capcom revealed some brand new information through a press release which should entice lifelong fans of the series and may even grab some newcomers who are only into Marvel “because it’s cool”.
Specifically, Marvel Vs. Capcom is changing its play style back to the free form 2 v 2 battles from before MVC2 and instead shifting focus on sharper gameplay and unique combos. Not to repeat the mistake of Street Fighter IV, MVC Infinite will have a fully “immersive” story mode where fan favorites will team up to take down the combined menace of Ultron Sigma.
If that almagamation sounds familiar to you, then you’re right on the money. Apparently Ultron and Sigma (from the Mega Man series) have combined into one similar to how Onslaught (a combination of Professor X and Magneto) was the boss of the original MvC. The story will focus on the battle against this deadly foe and probably feature a few twists and turns through out.
In addition, one new and seven returning characters have been confirmed for the roster:
- Ultron (First Appearance)
- Hulk (Returning)
- Thor (Returning)
- Hawkeye (Returning)
- Rocket Raccoon (Returning)
- Chun-Li (Returning)
- Strider Hiryu (Returning)
- Chris Redfield (Returning)
As you may notice from this list and the previous trailer, no Marvel properties outside of the Avengers Films and the Marvel Cinematic Universe have been added. This is perhaps due to the relationship between Fox and Marvel currently but there is no telling if this will change as time goes on. There have been some rumors that we’ll see some X-Men pop up but until we see them in action, we may have to assume that Sentinel and Magneto have finally been outed.
Marvel Vs Capcom Infinite also dropped the official North American release date which just happens to be September 19th, 2017 for the PS4, Xbox One, and Windows PC. In addition, they’ll be releasing a few different collector’s editions to pick from with the highest end version coming in at $199.99 and featuring a full set of inifinity stones. While I’m not drawn in by that sort of thing, I can admit that this bundle is mighty tempting and would make a pretty unique collectible.
