Final Fantasy XII only falls into either two camps for fans of the series: hate or love. The dividing line for this, however, was primarily drawn when it came to the combat within the game. Players who loathed the game did so because they saw their favorite franchise moving away from its turn-based origins to a more automatic system focused on flash and less direct control. However for those that loved it, myself included it, the gambit system actually was one of the deeper parts of the game and made an otherwise unremarkable title feel like a real Final Fantasy. FFXII: The Zodiac Age released an all new trailer today to teach new players about the wonders of the system and to remind veterans that it really wasn’t so bad.
The gambit system, as Square would tell you, is a “ground-breaking combat system which utilizes customizable AI “gambits” to let players adapt to any situation during battle.” This journalist will go a step further and add on that it is easily the deepest customizable script tool actually made by the game’s creators. In most games, when you hear of someone creating a script or a bot, it is immediately frowned upon. Healing bots and the such are a pain in the side of any hardcore player of an MMO, however, when you hear of a “perfect heal bot build” in FFXII, players rejoice instead.
The options available are so intricate that if you are even remotely good at If-Then statements, you can create a gambit strong enough that you can push forward through a whole grassy plain chock full of monsters and your team will wreck shop across the entire place. That was kind of what I loved about the system and why it still stands on such a pedestal. Unlike its successor, FFXIII, you actually create the rules from the beginning and if they succeed, it’s because you made a gambit strong enough to adapt to the situation.
What’s more, FFXII: The Zodiac Age also brings the job system from the International release of the game that lets you add even more specialization to every one of the characters. Square also noted:
“Players can also freely develop their characters and tactics with the all-new Zodiac Job System, which allows each character to battle as two of 12 unique and beloved jobs.”
Love it or hate it, Final Fantasy XII was one of the last great FF games outside of FFXI and FFXIV and its new shiny resurrection will give players of all experience levels a chance to play one fo the defining entries in the ever-expanding world of Ivalice. FFXII: The Zodiac Age is set to release on July 11th for the PS4. No word on any other releases yet but given their success on Steam, I wouldn’t expect it to stay exclusive for very long.
