The Xbox E3 2017 event just closed out and boy was it a doozy. Clocking in at about an hour and 40 minutes, the conference covered everything from Crackdown 3 to the brand new Ori game. What everyone was waiting for didn’t occur until the very end, however, which was Bioware’s newest title: Anthem.
Following the reveal of Project Scorpio as the Xbox One X (more on that soon!), Anthem revealed itself as a co-op adventure with its ties deep within the high freedom gameplay that Bioware is famous for. As Jon Warner explained, the world of Anthem is lush, savage, and mysterious. As shown in the teaser trailer yesterday, the humans on the planet are forced to live in fairly small colonies. This is because the dangers outside their walls are far more deadly than anything found on Earth. That’s where the players come in. Players take on the role of freelancers who don exo-suits named Javelins that enhance their abilities to superhuman heights and allow them to contend with mother nature at her worst.
The javelin exo-suits come in a wide variety of options and are fully customizable to fit the playstyle of each player. Two of the suits shown off during the conference included the Ranger and the Colossus. The Ranger class exo-suit is balanced and gives a good variety of movement while the Colossus suit is a hulking powerhouse. As they set out into the world, the second “player” Paul joined by falling from the sky which was definitely entertaining to watch.
Shortly after creating their two man squad, they proceeded to jump off the ledge and flew around like Ironman as they closed in on their target. The movement during the trailer was almost flawless and it was clear Bioware had been designing this for quite some time. There was a moment where the main player dove into the water and the jets continued to work flawlessly propelling her submerged as they did in the air. As they continued towards their goal, they encountered a multitude of different creatures that were both small and large in scale giving a very realistic feel to the world.
As they finally found their objective, Paul, in the colossus, shot a mortar and killed quite a few of the objectives in one shot which was followed by the first player locking on and launching a barrage of missiles at the new enemies. If this sounds like Mech Warrior or Zone of the Enders then you’re not too far off. It felt very much like one of those titles as they finished mopping up the last of the quest objectives.
Warner continued by explaining about dynamic events within the world and showed off a “Shaper Storm”. While he didn’t go into too much detail on exactly what that was, the party did call in reinforcements to help handle the threat and this may be where Anthem begins to really shine. After calling in their reinforcements, both Paul and player 1 ran off into a storm that was ripping up trees, causing the wildlife to scurry away, and sending lightning strikes in every direction. It was a spectacle to behold and supposedly all running in 4k, 60 FPS. As they reached their goal, they jumped up and flew into the eye of the storm for… well, we don’t know yet. The footage ended there.
From what we do know though, Anthem has been designed from the ground up to work with the Xbox One X and will support at least 4 player co-op. In addition, we know that we won’t have to wait long after the launch of the Xbox One X since Anthem will be available sometime in 2018.
